A 22 kW Wallbox sounds impressive, but most drivers will never use even half of it. Here's what actually determines your charging speed at home.

Bought a 22 kW Wallbox? There's a good chance you just overpaid. Your actual charging speed isn't set by the number printed on the box — it comes down to three far less glamorous things: what your car can actually accept, the state of your home's wiring, and how much you actually drive day to day. The first move after buying an electric car shouldn't be browsing charger showrooms — it should be a sober look at your own electrical setup and your daily mileage.

Spanish outlet Motor.es puts it plainly: a driver who covers short distances will do just fine with a fairly modest home charger. Cutting corners on the wiring itself, though, is a different story. Spain's ITC-BT-52 regulation requires a dedicated charging circuit, mandatory protective devices, and a check on whether the existing line can handle the expected load. The rule also specifically bans the use of extension cords or adapters — no workarounds allowed.

All the work has to go through an authorized installation company — that's a requirement of the low-voltage electrical installation rules, and there's no way around it. Apartment owners, though, get a welcome shortcut. If a private charging point is installed on your own designated spot in a shared garage, Spanish law doesn't require the owners' association to approve it — you just have to notify them in advance. The cost of installation and electricity, however, still falls entirely on the owner.

Another piece of advice that sounds universal but isn't — charging every EV strictly within a 20–80% window. There's no single limit that fits every battery: the right approach is to follow the specific manufacturer's guidance. Tesla, for instance, tells owners to use the daily charge limit the car itself recommends — for some versions, that's around 80%, with 100% reserved for longer trips.

The financial math has shifted too — and this is where it's easy to get the wrong idea. Spain's Programa Auto+, whose rules were approved on July 22, 2026, subsidizes the purchase of electric and electrified vehicles. Home charging infrastructure, though, isn't on the list of subsidized items at all, so the cost of the Wallbox, the cable, and the installation can't automatically be folded into that support.

The whole pre-purchase check comes down to three numbers: how much AC power your car can actually accept, how much load your home wiring can handle, and how much energy you actually need to put back into the battery overnight. Only once those three line up does it become clear whether you genuinely need an expensive Wallbox — or whether a simpler setup covers the same daily routine and saves you real money.
