GMC is bringing a trick to the Sierra EV that used to belong only to Tesla and pricey aftermarket security systems. For the 2027 model year, cameras on this massive pickup stop being a mere parking aid — they start working against thieves, vandals, and bad luck on the road. The truck gets three new features at once: Cabin Glance, Surround Vision Recorder, and Security Recording.
The most useful change: the exterior cameras can now record video and save it for later review. Surround Vision Recorder essentially turns the standard 360-degree camera system into a multi-camera dash cam. GMC officially confirms the ability to record, view, and save footage from the Surround Vision cameras.
Files can be saved to a USB drive — after a crash, say, or some unusual moment on a trip. But the real standout is Security Recording. The moment the alarm system suspects a break-in attempt or picks up on other suspicious activity and triggers the alarm, the exterior cameras start recording on their own, no driver input required. GMC's official manual spells it out: Surround Vision Recorder, when equipped, activates alongside the alarm, including after cabin motion sensors, tilt sensors, or glass-breakage sensors trip.
The third feature works completely differently — and it doesn't record anything. Cabin Glance uses a rearward-facing camera in the headliner console and pipes the image of rear passengers straight to the center display. No more twisting around to check on a kid, a pet, or cargo. But GMC is careful to note: this mode doesn't store or record video at all — it's just a glance backward, not surveillance.
The sheer number of exterior camera angles was never the Sierra EV's weak spot to begin with. The 2026 model already offers up to 14 available camera views covering the space around the truck. That's exactly why the 2027 update matters — not for adding more pictures, but for shifting the role of the hardware that's already there, from passive viewing to recording and security duty. The Sierra EV 2027 is also switching to a built-in NACS port, meaning access to Tesla charging stations without a separate CCS adapter.
Production of the new model year is expected to start on October 12, 2026; GMC's official Sierra EV 2027 page hasn't published full specs as of this writing. Either way, the value of this camera update goes well beyond one more pretty picture on the 16.8-inch display.
The Sierra EV now packs features that can leave behind video evidence after a crash or a break-in attempt — and that's no longer just a nice option, but hardware that could save an owner the cost of a separate dash cam and hand them solid proof in a dispute.
