Mercedes-AMG pulled back the cover — just barely — and teased something the brand has never had before. If the silhouette under that camouflage really belongs to the expected GT SUV, this is the first AMG crossover ever built on an architecture the engineers in Affalterbach designed entirely from scratch, rather than borrowing one from an existing Mercedes. The project was officially confirmed back in 2024 — the wait has been a long one.
The fresh images reveal roof rails, a low, coupe-like roofline and taillights that echo the electric GT 4-Door. The car doesn't have a name yet. No premiere date either. So calling it the GT SUV without a caveat is still premature. But Mercedes' Swiss dealer isn't holding back: the badge is already in use there, with a world premiere expected in 2026 and deliveries pencilled in for 2027.
The technical picture is far clearer. Mercedes-AMG has already confirmed the AMG.EA platform for the SUV, along with axial-flux electric motors and a new high-performance battery solution. And that's where the original report — Autoblog — got something wrong: axial-flux describes the motors, not the battery.
The benchmark is the already-revealed GT 4-Door. Its entry-level GT 53 gets an 800-volt system, a 106 kWh battery, charging up to 600 kW and two electric motors producing a combined 544 hp. The higher-end GT 55 and GT 63 take a different route entirely — a three-motor setup with axial-flux units, and the power figures jump accordingly. None of that can simply be carried over to the SUV yet: Mercedes-AMG hasn't announced official specs for the production version.
Power, range, battery, price — that's what keeps the suspense alive until the reveal. What's no longer up for debate is the positioning: this won't be another AMG-badged GLE or GLS. It's a standalone electric model wearing the proud tag “Born in Affalterbach.”
