Spy shots reveal the electric BMW X5 M testing on public roads, with rumors of 800 to 1,300 horsepower. Here's what BMW has actually confirmed, and what's still pure guesswork.

Four motors. One per wheel. While the whole internet argues over 800 or 1,300 horsepower for the future BMW X5 M, something else deserves the spotlight — how that power actually reaches the pavement. A G95 prototype has already hit public roads for testing, but BMW itself is staying quiet: no official announcement, no confirmed output. So those four-digit predictions shouldn't be treated as production specs just yet. Industry outlets expect the car to arrive sometime in spring or summer 2028.

The technical foundation is already here. In January, BMW M officially revealed its new M eDrive system: on the fully electric M cars, each of the four motors drives its own wheel, with electronics deciding on the fly where the torque goes and how much. The front axle can disengage completely — keeping that rear-drive character alive while saving energy on the highway. The battery holds over 100 kWh of usable capacity, running on 800-volt architecture.

Here's the catch: none of those numbers automatically transfer to the G95. BMW hasn't disclosed the X5 M's exact battery capacity, its output, or its charging speed. The source figures from AutoIndustriya — 108 kWh, up to 400 kW, and a range of roughly 800 to over 1,300 horsepower — are preliminary estimates, not factory specifications. Remember that caveat: it's tempting to forget it as this story unfolds.

There's already a benchmark to work from — the production fifth-generation X5, unveiled June 30. The electric iX5 60 xDrive puts out 425 kW (578 hp), runs on 800-volt architecture, and charges at up to 460 kW; preliminary WLTP range sits at 845 km. The X5 G65 itself already spans gasoline, hybrid, electric, and eventually hydrogen versions within a single generation.

Spy photos of the G95 leave little doubt: aggressive air intakes, oversized brakes, a face all its own. BMWBLOG is betting on a four-motor setup and 800 to 900 hp — while openly admitting BMW hasn't confirmed any of it. The same outlet points to April 2028 as the production start date at Spartanburg.

And here's the real twist: an electric prototype doesn't mean the death of the combustion X5 M. Industry sources keep pointing to a parallel V8 version, and BMW M has already shown it doesn't need to retire gasoline the moment an electric flagship shows up. So the right question right now isn't “EV instead of V8?” — it's “will buyers get two completely different X5 M models at once?”
