A $17 part just brought a wrecked supercar back to life. British car YouTuber Mat Armstrong bought a wrecked McLaren 600LT in Greece, sight unseen, and gave himself a brutal deadline: seven days. The car refused to start. The culprit turned out to be a blown pyro fuse, and instead of the original McLaren unit, Armstrong found a compatible Mercedes-Benz component — for just $17.
The parts-swapping didn’t stop there. For the damaged suspension, the team used a lower control arm from a McLaren 720S. It wasn’t a straight fit: the 720S runs hydraulic suspension, while the 600LT uses a mechanical anti-roll bar, so the arm had to be adapted. A cracked cast-aluminum door hinge was repaired by welding, and the deployed seatbelts were sent to specialists to have their pretensioners rebuilt.
This is where the story stops being just a tale about a cheap part. A suspension arm, a pyrotechnic component in the electrical system, seatbelt pretensioners — these are all safety-critical parts. The 600LT’s underlying hardware makes the whole experiment even riskier. This isn’t a car where suspension geometry or passive safety should get a cosmetic-repair mindset.
