Renault just gave its cheapest electric hatchback a glow-up nobody saw coming. The brand quietly updated the specs of the entry-level Renault 5 Five on its Belgian configurator, and the numbers speak for themselves: the electric motor now makes 80 kW, or around 110 hp, up from the previous 70 kW (95 hp) unit. There's a catch, though — the battery pack shrank from 40 kWh to 37 kWh.
Range for the new version comes in at 305 km on the WLTP cycle. But that's not the headline. For the first time, the base Five can actually fast-charge: it now supports DC charging at up to 80 kW. A top-up from 15% to 80% takes just 21 minutes. Compare that to the old 40 kWh Five, which had no fast-charging support at all.
On the Belgian site, the Renault 5 Five with the new powertrain is priced from €24,900 including taxes. There's a wait involved, though — Renault notes the 37 kWh version won't be orderable until later.
One more detail worth noting: the new battery uses LFP chemistry. Renault previously confirmed it would roll out LFP packs across its EV lineup starting in 2026, though the current Renault 5 page doesn't spell out the chemistry of this specific 37 kWh unit. Renault 5's motor upgrades were reported earlier.
