The logic is simple: the electronics detect the moment a driver turns the wheel but the car stubbornly keeps going straight, then the system steps in with a mix of steering and braking to try to restore control faster than the driver could alone.
Here’s where things get strange. The system relies on steer-by-wire, meaning there’s no rigid mechanical link between the wheel in your hands and the wheels on the road. That’s exactly what gives Nissan the freedom to do this: the patent allows the front wheels to oscillate up to 20 times per second, and in one described scenario, they can swing as much as 45 degrees in either direction. These are figures from a patent document, not a confirmed production setting — but it sounds a lot like the steering wheel shaking in your hands, minus the risk of it being ripped out of them.
The point of all that wheel-shaking is simple: break up the film of water under the tire and get contact with the road back as quickly as possible. Hydroplaning isn’t the only trigger, either — the same system is meant to kick in on mud, sand, or any other surface where grip suddenly drops off.
This isn’t new territory for Nissan — it’s just that the company used to be content with a warning, not an intervention. Back in 1996, Nissan patented a U.S. system that detected hydroplaning based on wheel rotation data. Back then, the electronics simply sensed danger. This new filing goes further: it wants to actively change the car’s trajectory and wheel behavior once danger has already arrived.
