Two years ago, Volkswagen blamed weak demand for shelving the electric California. Now the excuses have run out: on August 28 at the Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf, the ID. California Cruise will make its debut, built on the ID. Buzz platform. It's still a concept, but the company is calling it the starting point for an entire family of battery-electric campers — with production versions promised to roll out in stages through 2028.
The contrast with 2024 is hard to miss. Back then, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles' head of sales and marketing, Lars Krause, laid out the pause without sugarcoating it: “Every development program has technical challenges. That has nothing to do with the project being stopped. After a close look at market data and our customers, we concluded that, from our point of view, there simply isn't demand yet for this type of vehicle. We expect that demand to arrive in the second half of the decade. Of course, we're keeping it in mind. The ID. Buzz is an iconic model, and a potential California version would be iconic too.” Demand, it seems, has finally arrived.
The stopgap solution was electrifying the regular California: the current model is available as an eHybrid 4MOTION, capable of up to 89 km on electric power alone. So Volkswagen didn't wait for a fully electric camper to plug the California in — but a battery-electric version on the ID. Buzz architecture remained the next step for a long time.
Now that step has a date on the calendar. Specs, on the other hand, are still missing. Volkswagen hasn't yet revealed battery capacity, range, charging power, the added weight of the camper equipment, or the layout of the living area for the ID. California Cruise. Full technical details are promised right at the Caravan Salon, which runs from August 28 to September 6.
That show debut will be the first real test of how far the project has moved beyond a standard ID. Buzz. For a camper, the added equipment weight and the real-world range on a trip matter most — and those are exactly the numbers Volkswagen has chosen not to share yet.
