Tesla asked for five thousand cars. It got ten. The Nevada Transportation Authority has issued Tesla Robotaxi, LLC an AVNC Permit 002, clearing the company to carry paying passengers in fully autonomous vehicles — but the scale is nowhere near what Tesla had in mind. The document is dated July 27, 2026. The cars are limited to an approved zone along the Las Vegas Strip corridor in Clark County.
Tesla had originally requested authority to run up to 5,000 vehicles within the first 12 months. The regulator decided otherwise: the permit that was actually issued caps the fleet at ten robotaxis. Expanding the fleet or the geofence will require separate approval — and there's no word yet on when that might come.
Freedom of movement is tightly controlled too. Rides are barred on roads with posted speed limits above roughly 72 km/h (45 mph). Pickups are also off-limits within about 0.4 km (a quarter mile) of Harry Reid International Airport without additional authorization. Every vehicle must carry visible Robotaxi markings, and riders must be warned in advance that no one is driving.
The permit also requires “appropriate human supervision,” without spelling out what that actually looks like — a question the regulator left wide open. Tarantas News previously reported on Tesla Robotaxi's expansion into other U.S. cities. An exact date for the start of passenger rides in Las Vegas has not been announced.
