Volkswagen has finally unveiled the production Tukan — and this is no ordinary crossover with a bed bolted on. It's a new compact unibody pickup, developed entirely in Brazil for South American markets. The model comes in two body styles: a two-door single cab with an extended cargo bed, and a four-door version with a proper second row.
Its main rivals will be the Fiat Strada and Chevrolet Montana — not the larger Ford Maverick, as you might expect. The Tukan is Volkswagen's first pickup built on the MQB architecture. But here's the twist: instead of borrowing the regular suspension from its crossover siblings, VW fitted a rigid rear axle with leaf springs. The automaker says the move was needed to boost payload capacity and durability.
Volkswagen hasn't revealed exact body dimensions or maximum payload yet. The two trims look noticeably different, though. The work-focused single-cab Tukan Robust gets unpainted bumpers, while the four-door Extreme is dressed up considerably: full LED lighting, dark alloy wheels, a sport bar behind the cab, and the signature yellow Amarelo Canario paint.
Electrification is another key detail. Volkswagen officially calls the Tukan the first electrified vehicle of its Brazilian development program. That version will use 76% locally produced components, versus up to 85% for the standard Total Flex model.
There's word of a 1.5-liter TSI paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, though a caveat is in order: Volkswagen hasn't published the power output, engine displacement, or exact hybrid setup for the Tukan yet. So figures like 150 hp and 250 Nm shouldn't be treated as official specs for the production truck. The Tukan will be built at the São José dos Pinhais plant in the state of Paraná.
Early VW statements pointed to production starting in 2027, but more recent company material now suggests assembly could kick off as early as 2026. An exact sales date hasn't been announced; the pickup is expected to reach South American dealerships in the first half of 2027.
