Volkswagen has found a way to turn one of the least noticed parts under the hood into a weapon against crash injuries. One of the most overlooked components in the engine bay could become part of the car’s passive safety system — in a severe frontal collision, the part wouldn’t just break under load, it would deform in a predetermined way, redirecting the engine’s motion and reducing the force transferred into the passenger cell.
And this isn’t just an idea on paper. The development has already moved well past the stage of an ordinary patent application: records at the German Patent and Trade Mark Office show Volkswagen filed the application on April 17, 2025, the decision to grant the patent was made on May 4, 2026, and the document itself, DE102025115270B3, was published on August 13. The owner is listed as Volkswagen AG.
The part in question is a so-called pendulum mount, which limits how far the powertrain can move under torque. The difference here is that Volkswagen isn’t leaving its crash behavior to chance — the way it deforms in a serious impact is engineered in from the start. According to CarBuzz, in a frontal crash the engine could shift rearward without unwanted upward movement, and in certain scenarios drop lower instead, spending part of the impact energy bending its own mount in the process.
Coincidence? Not quite. The idea of using the powertrain’s trajectory to help control crash outcomes isn’t new — Nissan’s patent documentation for a different pendulum-style setup explicitly mentions controlling powertrain behavior in a frontal collision. So Volkswagen’s real shift here is making a familiar part deform predictably, not inventing the underlying principle.
The design has a second calculated benefit, too. The mount can be tuned to hold its shape below a certain load threshold — letting engineers separate a genuinely severe collision, where controlled deformation is useful, from a minor bump, after which unnecessary mount damage would just drive up the repair bill.
The patent, however, doesn’t confirm the solution will actually reach production Volkswagens. The next real milestone will be this mount showing up in the technical documentation of a specific platform or model — only then can we talk about it moving from the patent portfolio onto the assembly line.
