Toyota just updated the Probox—and almost immediately, talk of its successor began. Japanese outlet Response says a full generational redesign could arrive in the second half of 2027 or in 2028. That sounds almost contradictory: the last confirmed update landed on November 25, 2025, and it touched the safety systems, among other things. Toyota hasn't made anything official yet—but the rumors are already circulating.
The model has been on sale since 2002, and in 2014 Toyota carried out a major overhaul, reworking the front of the platform, the suspension, and several other systems. More than a decade on the same base—talk of a proper successor makes plenty of sense. For now, though, it's exactly that: a forecast.
According to Response, the next Probox could move to the compact TNGA GA-B architecture—the same one already underpinning the Yaris, Yaris Cross, and Aqua. Toyota does use that platform on those models. But the automaker hasn't confirmed its use on the Probox in any form.
Another prediction involves a new-generation hybrid system and a more modern look. Right now the Probox comes with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine and a hybrid setup. The official price in Japan starts at 1,918,400 yen. The hybrid GX starts at 2,038,300 yen. These are Japanese domestic prices, before any import duties, fees, delivery, or dealer markup.
Here's where it gets interesting for future buyers. Response estimates the next generation could cost 300,000 to 500,000 yen more. The source of that estimate isn't named, so it shouldn't be treated as Toyota's future price list. For now it's just a number worth remembering—and checking once the time comes.
So what's confirmed isn't a new Probox at all—just the current model carrying on after its 2025 update. The 2027-2028 timeline, the GA-B platform, and a new hybrid system only become facts once Toyota actually says so. Until then, it's all educated guesswork.
