Volvo is chasing a strange new goal: PHEVs that barely ever need their engine. Meet the XC70, the first car built for that idea — and the bigger shift coming to the XC60.

Volvo is rethinking what a plug-in hybrid is even for — and the fix says a lot about what went wrong before. The automaker is set to significantly expand the role of PHEVs in Europe, but it’s also rewriting the whole idea behind them. Volvo UK boss Nicole Melillo Shaw put it bluntly: a short electric range meant owners often stopped bothering to charge their PHEVs and simply drove them like regular petrol cars.

The next generation is supposed to behave differently. Most daily driving, done without the engine ever waking up. Right now, British XC60 and XC90 models manage roughly 50 miles — about 80 km — on electric power alone. Not exactly inspiring. The first proof of the new strategy is the XC70: Volvo claims over 200 km of electric-only range for it, under China’s CLTC cycle. That’s not the same as 200 km WLTP — the European certified figure will come in lower. But the ambition speaks for itself. The car rides on a dedicated SMA architecture built for long-range PHEVs, and its battery can charge from 0 to 80% in about 23 minutes.

Volvo has already confirmed the XC70 is being considered for Europe. Automotive News also reports a similar powertrain is being prepared for the updated XC60: a bigger battery expected to more than double its current electric range. Volvo itself hasn’t revealed specifics for that XC60 yet, so treat this as preliminary. And the changes are set to go even deeper.

In its strategy, Volvo describes the next generation of PHEVs as cars where the battery becomes the primary energy source, with the petrol engine acting as backup. Executives previously floated a target of around 100 miles, or 160 km, of electric range, with 800–1,000 km of total range. The engine can still connect directly to the wheels when conditions allow, so technically this isn’t a classic series-hybrid EREV.

There’s a very real reason behind the move. European data shows PHEVs are often far less efficient outside the lab: the European Commission indicates real-world CO² emissions run roughly 3.5 times higher than certified figures, partly because owners charge their cars less often than the test cycles assume. Volvo says its own numbers look better.

The company has previously reported that its PHEV owners drive without the engine roughly half the time, with more than 50% of the energy these cars use coming from grid electricity. The bet on hybrids is also tied to demand. In the UK, over the first seven months of 2026, Volvo sold around 9,000 fully electric cars, while roughly 31,000 of the brand’s cars used a petrol engine — almost 7,000 of them PHEVs.

So the company isn’t abandoning its EV push — it’s admitting the transition is moving slower than first expected. Volvo, in other words, is trying to fix the old plug-in hybrid’s core compromise not with an even better fuel-economy rating, but with a much bigger battery. If 100–150 km a day really can be covered without petrol, the engine becomes something you need mainly for the long trip — which is exactly how Volvo now defines a hybrid “used the way it’s meant to be.”

Tarantas.news previously reported that Geely plans to build premium cars at Volvo’s European plants starting in 2028. Specific models haven’t been named yet, and in parallel the company is preparing to build two electric models at Ford’s plant in Spain.
