Ford could be about to reclaim the space Excursion left empty back in 2005. In 2029, the company plans to start production of a large SUV with an EREV powertrain — and the vehicle is expected to be bigger than the current Expedition. But the Excursion name still exists only as speculation: Ford has not officially announced the model's return.
The comparison with the old Excursion makes sense, at least in terms of size. The last examples of the first generation measured about 5,751 mm in length, with a wheelbase of 3,482 mm. For comparison, today's Expedition MAX measures 5,631 mm bumper to bumper, with a wheelbase of around 3,340 mm. The difference in length is only about 12 cm, even though the old Excursion was built on the heavier Super Duty base. Twelve centimeters — and an entire era between them.
The biggest difference for a possible successor will be hidden under the body. Ford is actively shifting to EREV technology for its large vehicles: in this system, electric motors drive the wheels while the combustion engine works as a generator, extending range. It's already confirmed that the next-generation F-150 Lightning will get exactly this architecture, with an estimated range of over 700 miles, or more than 1,100 km.
Production of the prospective model is tied to the Tennessee Truck Plant. Ford itself confirms that starting in 2029, the plant is set to build new models in the Built Ford Tough family, though the company hasn't named a specific large SUV among them yet. So neither the Excursion name, nor the specs, nor the sales timeline can be considered confirmed today.
The original Excursion was produced for the 2000–2005 model years, seated up to nine people, and in some versions could tow nearly 5 tons. If Ford really does build a vehicle even bigger than the Expedition, reviving the old name would make sense — but until there's an official announcement, that remains just one of several possible scenarios.
Earlier, Tarantas.news reported that Ford had filed a patent application for a removable container under the trunk floor. In one version, it holds more than 100 liters of waterproof cargo, has a drain, and can double as a large car fridge.
