Forty Toyota GR Supra 2.0T cars recalled in China back in March turned out to be an undercount. Toyota has added 18 more vehicles to the campaign, pushing the total tied to this starter saga to 58 — a 45% jump. The cause hasn't changed: after repeated engine starts, abnormal wear can develop inside the starter.
The new batch covers imported Toyota Supra 2.0T units built between September 6, 2022, and February 28, 2023. China's State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) explicitly calls this an expansion of the recall announced on March 11, 2026, which originally covered 40 cars built between March 2, 2021, and September 29, 2022.
The defect develops gradually. Wear can make the engine harder to start, and in extreme cases could cause an internal short circuit in the starter and localized overheating, with a risk of fire. The regulator hasn't ordered owners to stop driving the cars, nor has it confirmed any fires linked to this campaign.
Owners of affected Supras won't pay a cent: Toyota Motor China Investment will install an improved starter free of charge. The company is contacting customers directly, and owners can check whether their car is included by looking up the VIN in China's recall system.
The expansion itself is the more telling part of this story. After the first campaign, Toyota and its supplier kept tracing the component's production history and turned up an additional group of cars. The next thing worth watching isn't Supra production numbers — the generation is already finished — but whether new VINs with the same starter turn up outside the current window.
