Nobody expected a truck upgrade to swallow the cab too. But that’s exactly what Dirtbox just did: the EV Pass-Through Canopy Camper for the Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV costs $12,999, and with the Midgate open it turns the lower deck into almost 3.35 m of continuous space. The upper level stays a separate bedroom.
It all comes down to the Midgate. On the Silverado EV, this factory partition between the cab and the bed opens up, stretching the usable length to 3.30 m in one of the factory configurations — the feature itself isn’t new. What is new is that Dirtbox built the camper around it: drivers get a lower bedroom, a work zone, or cargo space, without tearing down the upper bed every night. Almost annoyingly logical.
The module itself sits on an aluminum frame and comes with a memory-foam mattress, an insulated roof, ventilation, LED lighting, USB-A, USB-C, and 12-volt outlets on both levels. Mounting requires no drilling into the bed — but the maker still recommends professional installation, since fitting it around the Midgate and the interior pass-through isn’t the place to cut corners.

The shift is easy to spot in what the Midgate was even for. It used to exist mainly for hauling long cargo. Now a third-party builder has used that same opening to merge the cab, the bed, and two livable levels into one. And Dirtbox didn’t clutter the lower deck with fixed furniture, either: instead, you can load gear, bikes, a fridge, or tools in there — just like in a regular pickup.
One question is still hanging in the air, though. Dirtbox proudly talks up its lightweight aluminum build — and says nothing about how much the finished module actually weighs. For an electric truck, that’s not a small detail: every extra pound eats into payload and, potentially, range. So for a future Silverado EV or Sierra EV owner, the number that actually matters isn’t the USB port count — it’s an honest weight figure for the camper, installed and kitted out for the road.
