Why would a family-sized seven-seater need a tent on its roof? Jeep seems to have an answer — and for the Japanese market, it just built a Commander that turns into a full campsite in minutes. The limited Overland Field Style Edition will be built in just 100 units: half get a side awning, the other half get a brand-new Snow Peak Field Rise rooftop tent.
The base package costs 6.49 million yen. It includes a signature side tent with a side wall, a roof cargo basket and lockable roof crossbars. All 100 cars, regardless of version, get exclusive Field Style Edition graphics and a digital rearview mirror with a built-in dashcam.
The second version is priced at 6.60 million yen. Instead of the awning, it comes with an aerodynamic roof box and that Field Rise tent. The difference between the two versions is just 110,000 yen. A small gap, considering what's hiding behind it.
Here's what's hiding behind it: the Field Rise sold on its own costs 396,000 yen in Japan. It's built for one or two people, uses an inflatable frame and mounts directly to the vehicle's roof. But there's a catch that's bound to frustrate impatient buyers: the Commander Field Style Edition reaches dealers on September 12, while the Snow Peak tent itself doesn't go on sale until October 10. You simply can't fit it to a car you've already bought before that date — buyers will have to wait nearly a month.
The special series is based on the seven-seat Commander Overland. The regular Overland currently costs 6.44 million yen in Japan before paid paint. On paper, the Field Style Edition is only 50,000 yen more expensive — but Stellantis bundles in paint that's an option on the base car, which is why the automaker calls the outdoor package's price essentially on par with the standard version.
Of the 100 cars, 60 will be painted Brilliant Black Crystal and the other 40 Pearl White Tri-Coat. Jeep hasn't announced this version for Russia.
