Until August 11, Volkswagen preferred to keep things vague. The ID. California Cruise was a concept, and the price and delivery date stayed under wraps. At the Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf, the guessing game ended. Volkswagen's first electric California now has a number attached — starting at €60,761 — and a date: the first vans reach customers in early 2027.
That's a real shift from the original teaser. Volkswagen's official press release now confirms two wheelbase options, a foundation built on the ID. Buzz Pro, and a genuine sales launch. And the Cruise's biggest party trick isn't found on the road — it shows up the moment you park. The Vehicle-to-Load function delivers up to 2 kW continuously and up to 3.6 kW for short bursts, drawing power straight from the high-voltage battery to run a coffee machine, a kettle, a portable stove, a fridge, or an e-bike charger. A PowerSocket adapter comes standard.
For overnight stays, there's a 2.03 x 1.20 m bed with a 90 mm mattress, a blackout kit, two folding chairs, and a table. A dedicated California mode keeps the USB ports, lighting, and climate control running: Volkswagen claims the cabin can stay heated or cooled for up to 48 hours straight, though real-world runtime depends on battery charge and outside temperature.
The California app now adds route planning with charging stops, and Plug & Charge lets drivers start charging at a compatible station the moment they plug in — no separate authentication required.
There's one number Volkswagen still isn't ready to share — the ID. California Cruise's own WLTP range. Some reports mention 460–498 km, but those figures belong to the standard ID. Buzz Pro. The camping gear adds weight and changes energy consumption, so carrying those numbers over to the California would be premature.
The next chapter is already mapped out — deliveries begin in 2027, and by 2028 Volkswagen promises to expand its fully electric California family with additional models.
