Buick's Electra family might be about to get a little brother — a sedan noticeably smaller than today's 5,032mm L7. GM Authority reports, citing its own sources, that SAIC-GM has already pulled the first prototypes of the new model off the PATAC test track and onto public roads in Chinese cities. There's been no official announcement yet. But it's hard to keep a new car secret once it's out in traffic.
The new model is expected to slot in below the Electra L7 and push the sub-brand into a more mainstream segment. The logic checks out: the Xiao Yao architecture wasn't built around a single body style — it was designed from the start for sedans, SUVs and minivans with front-, rear- or all-wheel drive, and it supports pure electric, plug-in hybrid and series hybrid powertrains alike.
Exactly which versions the new sedan will get is still anyone's guess. GM Authority suggests at least two electrified variants are likely, but it's too early to treat that as a confirmed spec sheet. The name, dimensions, battery, power output and price all remain under wraps for now.
Comparing it to the current L7 puts things in perspective. The flagship sedan stretches 5,032mm on a 3,000mm wheelbase, and its all-electric version is already on sale in China with an 800-volt system and up to 702km of CLTC range. The new car should open up a class below the big L7 for Electra — not replace it. That's a fundamentally different story.
Buick has said before that the Xiao Yao family is meant to cover every key price segment of China's NEV market. A second, smaller sedan would fill one of the remaining gaps in that lineup. The next solid confirmation point will be registration with China's regulator — that's when exact dimensions, weight and powertrain details will finally surface.
