Mercedes-AMG boss Ola Källenius promises the next GT Black Series will be “insane” — more power than the GT 63 Pro, a flat-plane V8, and a 2027 reveal.

Mercedes-AMG is prepping the most radical V8 in its history — and now there’s a real date attached. The GT Black Series is set to be revealed in 2027, with sales starting in 2028. In an interview with Autocar, Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius called the upcoming car one of those projects where engineers were given significantly more freedom, and promised the result won’t disappoint the brand’s fans.

There aren’t many numbers yet, but one benchmark is already set: the new Black Series has to clearly beat the current GT 63 Pro on power and torque. The production GT 63 Pro makes 612 hp and 850 Nm, according to Mercedes. For comparison, the previous GT Black Series made 730 hp and 800 Nm. The bar was already high. Now they’re raising it further.

The upcoming car is being developed as close as possible to the next race-going AMG GT3. Mercedes already showed the Concept AMG GT Track Sport back in 2025 as an extreme take on the GT family with a V8 and an eye on new records, though the Black Series name wasn’t officially attached at the time.

The engine is a separate intrigue. Källenius confirmed AMG’s long-term bet on a new flat-plane-crank V8 for its sports models, though Autocar itself still frames its use in the Black Series as the most likely scenario rather than a confirmed spec. A similar engine has also been linked to the upcoming Mercedes-AMG CLE 63.

For the new Black Series, the bar is especially high: the previous car already had 730 hp, active aerodynamics and a 325 km/h top speed. So the next genuinely important milestone isn’t another prototype — it’s the reveal of the powertrain and the car’s weight. Those two numbers will show just how close the road-going Black Series really gets to the GT3 racer.
