The Prius is being declared dead ahead of schedule again. Talk has returned about Toyota possibly ending production of its famous hybrid, but the company’s official moves point in the opposite direction. On July 1, 2026, Toyota updated the model in Japan, and on July 16 it unveiled the 2027 Prius for the United States. Does that look like a car being prepared to disappear? Not yet.
In the U.S., the 2027 Prius remains a full member of the lineup and comes in four trims — LE, XLE, Nightshade and Limited. The fifth-generation hybrid system with a 2.0-liter engine delivers 194 hp with front-wheel drive and 196 hp with all-wheel drive. Toyota has not abandoned the Prius Plug-in Hybrid either: the plug-in version keeps its 220-hp powertrain.
But one thing really has changed. When the Prius arrived in the late 1990s, it became the defining symbol of Toyota’s hybrid revolution. Today the situation has flipped: gasoline-electric powertrains have spread across much of the brand’s mainstream range. The Prius no longer has to prove on its own that hybrids have a future. And that is exactly why the question of its next role is becoming so interesting.
There is just as much intrigue around the next generation. Toyota is indeed developing new 1.5- and 2.0-liter inline-four engines designed to work closely with electrified powertrains. That sounds like a suitable foundation for a future Prius, but there is an important “but”: the company has not said that these engines are destined for the sixth generation.
So as of September 2026, it is clearly too early to talk about the “end of the Prius.” The current car remains on sale, continues to receive updates and still sits in Toyota’s official lineup. What comes next is far more interesting. Toyota has not officially announced a sixth generation, a new engine for it or the retirement of the Prius name.
