Jeep Cherokee owners in Japan are facing a recall for a reason that sounds almost paradoxical: the car works, the lamp works, but its position may not meet a local rule. Stellantis Japan will have to modify the rear lighting on 1,523 vehicles to bring them into line with Japanese requirements.
Campaign №-4223 was registered by Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism on August 27, 2026. It covers Cherokee vehicles imported from April 4, 2014, through April 13, 2018, for a total of 1,523 units. There is another curious detail: Japanese outlet Response.jp listed the end of the import period as April 13, 2020, while the regulator's official document clearly states April 13, 2018.
The repair is hardly routine either. On every affected vehicle, the left rear fog lamp will be converted into a reverse lamp and the wiring will be modified accordingly. The reason is simple: the mounting height of the original reverse lamp may not comply with Japanese requirements.
This did not emerge after a string of crashes. The issue was identified following a finding by Japan's National Agency for Automobile and Land Transport Technology (NALTEC). One case of non-compliance has been recorded, with no accidents reported.
This has nothing to do with the completely new 2026 Jeep Cherokee. The recall concerns previous-generation KL vehicles imported into Japan before spring 2018. For their owners, the consequence is very concrete: the rear lighting has to be reworked.
The official recall number is №-4223, and the campaign began on August 27, 2026. Stellantis Japan will contact owners directly and publish information on its website; owners should check a specific vehicle with the manufacturer or a dealer using its chassis number. The remedy is to convert the left rear fog lamp into a reverse lamp and modify the wiring. The published MLIT documents do not list a separate Stellantis internal campaign number or a precise notification-mailing schedule.
