Alfa Romeo drops big-car plans to focus on Giulia, Stelvio and Tonale
Alfa Romeo cancels its planned U.S. electric SUV to refocus on core DNA, centering Giulia, Stelvio and Tonale. Next Stelvio uses STLA Medium for agility.
Alfa Romeo’s leadership has officially confirmed it is abandoning development of larger models, including the previously planned electric crossover for the U.S. market. Brand chief Santo Ficili stated that big cars do not belong in the marque’s DNA. The move reads like a return to core strengths rather than a chase for size.
Initially, the company intended to launch a large electric SUV in 2027 to compete with the BMW X5. That plan is now off the table: Alfa Romeo will concentrate on compact and midsize nameplates such as Giulia, Stelvio, and Tonale.
The next-generation Stelvio will be the brand’s largest vehicle, built on the STLA Medium platform, yet it will stay within today’s overall dimensions. That choice signals a focus on agility and proportion over sheer bulk.
Stepping away from larger projects follows a strategy rethink amid declining sales. The company aims to strengthen its foothold in key markets and deploy resources more efficiently. If the execution matches the intent, the upcoming Alfa Romeos could become some of the most engaging options in the premium segment.
