An expensive Renault EV repair could suddenly become far more manageable. Instead of replacing the traction motor with a brand-new unit, owners will be offered a remanufactured alternative that is about 30% cheaper. The Remakers has introduced an industrial remanufacturing program for the 6AM motor used in the Mégane E-Tech Electric, Scenic E-Tech Electric and Master E-Tech Electric.
The price is what really grabs attention. According to Renault Group, a remanufactured motor should cost on average about 30% less than an equivalent new unit. At the same time, its claimed performance and reliability remain on the level of a new part.
There is an important distinction, though: this is not simply a used motor from a breaker’s yard. Remanufacturing involves fully rebuilding the unit and checking its components. Serviceable parts are reused, worn elements are replaced or restored, and the assembled unit is inspected before returning to service. The Remakers already follows a similar path with 5A-family electric motors and power electronics.
The 6AM itself is no newcomer. Renault has produced it at the Cléon plant since 2022. It is a synchronous electric motor with an electrically excited wound rotor, which allows the design to do without permanent magnets containing rare-earth materials.
But 30% less does not mean the entire repair bill will drop by the same amount. The saving applies specifically to the remanufactured component. The final invoice can still be higher once diagnostics, removal and installation of the power unit, and other necessary work are included.
That is where the program becomes especially interesting for used-EV owners. As the fleet ages, an expensive traction-motor failure no longer has to mean buying a brand-new unit at the highest possible price. A remanufactured motor can make getting the car back on the road significantly cheaper without the claimed loss of performance or quality.
