Just three “horses” — yet that tiny number hides a much more telling change. Renault is preparing the Boreal for the 2027 model year in Brazil: output from the 1.3-liter turbo engine on ethanol will fall from 163 to 160 hp. The move aligns the crossover with the new Niagara and prepares it for stricter Proconve L8 rules, Motor1 reports, citing Renault Geely do Brasil chief Ariel Montenegro. On gasoline, output stays at 156 hp, while peak torque remains 270 Nm. For now, Renault's official Brazilian configurator still lists the Boreal at 163 hp and 270 Nm.
Those emissions rules explain why Renault needs to trim the three horsepower. Under Proconve L8, Brazil's Ibama monitors corporate emissions figures for passenger cars, and from January 1, 2027, the standard for light passenger vehicles becomes tougher. So this is not a change in the Boreal's character, but a targeted powertrain calibration for the next environmental stage.
But the power cut is far from the most interesting thing coming to the Boreal. According to Motor1, the Brazilian SUV is expected to receive a more sophisticated hybrid system in 2027, with a 48-volt architecture and a separate electric motor on the rear axle. A similar solution has also been linked to the Niagara, although Renault has not yet disclosed the final specifications for the Brazilian Boreal. In Turkey, meanwhile, the crossover has already taken a different route: a full hybrid E-Tech rated at 160 hp has been officially presented there.
The Google Gemini story is even more intriguing. There is no longer any need to tie its arrival to the Niagara's November launch in the Brazilian market: Renault officially said the gradual OTA rollout of Gemini began on June 15, 2026, and the Boreal is explicitly among the compatible international models with openR link. The update is free and requires no service visit, but there is an important caveat: deployment happens in waves and depends on available language and openR link version. In other words, June 15 marked the start of the rollout, not a single update date for every vehicle.
So the 2027 Boreal really will lose three “horses” in Brazil, but that is hardly the biggest news. Renault is simultaneously preparing the crossover for further electrification, while its infotainment system is already part of the brand's shift from Google Assistant to Gemini. Less power on paper — far more change under the body and on the screen.
