The Toyota 4Runner earns a Good rating in the IIHS small overlap front crash test for 2025 and 2026 models. However, rear-seat protection and headlight glare need improvement.

The new Toyota 4Runner has earned a Good rating in the IIHS small overlap front crash test on the driver's side. That result applies to both 2025 and 2026 model years.

Earlier, the 4Runner only managed an Acceptable rating in the moderate overlap front test. In that test, the rear dummy's head came close to the front seatback, and the lap belt slid from the pelvis onto the abdomen.

IIHS also praised the automatic braking system for its performance with other vehicles and pedestrians. The LATCH system earned a Good+ rating thanks to additional anchor positions. Headlight performance varies by trim: some LED units produce excessive glare, while pricier lights do a better job controlling glare but still aren't perfect when it comes to visibility.

Among top SUVs for 2026, the 4Runner remains a rugged body-on-frame model. However, the IIHS results highlight that rear-seat protection and lighting are areas that need improvement.
