Japanese cars with the most reliable engines, from the 1990 Honda Accord to the 2026 Toyota Camry. These models can exceed one million miles with proper care.

TopSpeed compiled a list of Japanese cars with the most reliable engines. Saying these vehicles 'never break down' is admittedly bold—every car needs maintenance. But the ranking itself clearly shows which models have held a reputation for near-bulletproof reliability over the years.

Topping the list is the 1990 Honda Accord. The fourth generation has long been a symbol of simple, durable engineering: some examples have clocked over 1 million miles with routine care. In second place is the 2011 Lexus LS 460, powered by the 4.6-liter V8 from the 1UR family. These engines are prized for their longevity, smoothness, and built-in margin of safety.

The ranking also includes the 2014 Toyota Camry and the 2026 Toyota Camry. The new Camry is exclusively hybrid for the first time, and its 2.5-liter A25 system earned high marks for reliability and a range of over 660 miles on a single tank. Other entries include models from Honda, Subaru, Mazda, and Acura.

The key takeaway for buyers is simple: Japanese reliability isn’t just a myth—it comes from the combination of a good engine, simple design, and proper maintenance. Even the toughest Accord or Lexus can be ruined by bad oil or overheating, but with proper care, these cars truly outlast many newer rivals.
