Ford Australia says no to a battery-electric Ranger for now, citing that current EV tech and charging infrastructure can't meet the demands of Australian pickup buyers, emphasizing diesel and plug-in hybrid instead.

Ford Australia currently has no plans to launch a fully electric Ranger. The company is looking into the possibility but believes that existing battery technology and charging infrastructure are not up to the demands of Australian pickup buyers.

Program director Mario Brandini said Ford is evaluating various powertrains, but a pure EV cannot yet match the capability of a diesel or plug-in hybrid. He added that the challenge comes down to physics and real-world customer benefits.

Marketing director Ambrose Henderson pointed out that EV sales growth is mostly in small and medium SUVs, which don't require the same towing and payload capacity. For the Ranger, the ability to tow 3.5 tonnes is essential, and current EV tech and infrastructure in Australia can't reliably support that.

Ford already sells a plug-in hybrid Ranger Hybrid in Australia, offering the same 3.5-tonne towing capacity as the diesel versions. Meanwhile, the market includes electric pickups like the LDV eT60 and KGM Musso EV, and Toyota is preparing to launch the HiLux BEV locally. For now, Ford is focusing on internal combustion and plug-in hybrid powertrains, not a full battery-electric version.
