BMW finally fills the gap between its flagship and Rolls-Royce. Vision Alpina just showed the way — and the first production car arrives in 2027.

BMW is filling a gap people have been talking about for years. Between its own flagship and Rolls-Royce lies a wide corridor populated by Bentley, Maybach and Range Rover. Alpina is heading straight into it — a brand BMW secured the rights to back in 2022, and the first concept developed entirely under Munich's control has just landed at the 2026 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este.

The Vision BMW Alpina has no production ambitions. It’s a manifesto for a direction: restrained proportions, signature BMW cues, zero aggression. No M aesthetics, no aerodynamic theatre. A quiet delivery — and there’s logic behind it.

BMW Alpina vice president Oliver Viellechner makes no secret of the reasoning. The ultra-wealthy audience is growing, and demand is shifting from ostentatious luxury to something quieter and more personal. Before the designers picked up a pencil, says BMW Group design boss Adrian van Hooydonk, the team dug into the brand’s history and sat down with its customers.

The real question is how Alpina will differ from M. The answer is blunt: M is about sport. Alpina is about speed. The formula “speed, not sport” sounds almost like a manifesto. No Nürburgring ambitions. Long, fast journeys, grand touring, comfort without compromise. And the benchmark — 300 km/h.

The first production Alpina of this new era arrives in 2027. It will be based on the 7 Series sedan and sit at the very top of the range. Customers will pick from BMW’s powertrain portfolio — and the choice will be wide. Alpina won’t shout. It will be fast and quiet. And that, it seems, should be enough to lure those who used to walk straight into Bentley showrooms.
