South Africans just rewrote the rules of premium armored transport. SVI Engineering has revealed its most lavish project to date — a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter reborn as a rolling fortress. And this isn’t just another bulletproof van. According to its creators, it’s a private jet for the road.
The unveiling took place at Securex South Africa 2026 in Johannesburg. The base is a long-wheelbase Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 517 CDI. SVI’s engineers stripped the vehicle to the last bolt and rebuilt it with a bespoke B6-class armoring package: steel panels, lightweight composites and ballistic glass. The protection is rated against assault-rifle threats — AK-47, R1, R5.
But the real story isn’t the armor. It’s what waits behind the bulkhead. The front compartment is reserved for the driver and a close-protection officer. The entire rear has been transformed into a business-class VIP lounge. Two captain’s chairs with massage functions. A dedicated climate-control system. A kitchen unit with two fridges. An enclosed restroom. And that’s the standard spec. Tick the options list and you get a retractable 55-inch screen, a premium sound system, wooden flooring and a choice of carpeting.
“Our goal was to create something close to flying first class in a private jet. The moment the doors close, the outside world ceases to exist,” said SVI Business Development Director Nicol Louw.
And under the hood? Nothing exotic. The Sprinter 517 CDI carries the 2.0-liter OM654 turbodiesel, rated at 125 kW — that’s 170 hp. Torque is 400 Nm. Drive goes to the rear wheels through either a six-speed manual or a nine-speed automatic. To stop the armor from killing the ride, SVI reworked the suspension — and promises a ride quality worthy of the private-jet pitch.
