Australia just lost the old Ora hatch. Now GWM is reviving the body style — but as a lowered version of the Ora 5 SUV, sharing the exact same battery and range.

First, Australians lost the Ora hatchback — the brand quietly pulled it from production. Now GWM is bringing the “hatchback” body style back. But it is not the same car. And not the way anyone expected.

GWM Australia has officially confirmed it will expand the electric Ora 5 lineup with a new “hatchback” variant. The reveal came during a livestream dedicated to the brand’s EVs, hybrids and plug-in hybrids. Exact on-sale timing, trim levels and pricing have yet to be announced.

Here is the twist. The Ora 5 “hatchback” is not a new model at all. It is a lowered version of the already-revealed Ora 5 SUV: the roof rails are gone, the ground clearance has been trimmed, and the tyres have changed. The hatch sits 82 mm lower overall than the SUV, with 40 mm less clearance underneath.

Driving range is identical on both versions — 435 km on the WLTP cycle. Power comes from a 58.3 kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery. Documents on the new variant also list narrower 215/50 R18 tyres instead of the SUV’s 225/60 R18. Length, width, wheelbase and kerb weight are unchanged: the Ora 5 “hatchback” measures 4471 mm long, 1833 mm wide and 1559 mm tall, riding on a 2720 mm wheelbase.

In Australia the Ora 5 SUV sells from A$33,990 to A$36,990. The “hatchback” price remains a mystery — and that number alone will decide whether GWM can step into the same river twice.
