Opel just turned its flagship SUV into a police cruiser. The Grandland Plug-in Hybrid now wears riot gear, sirens and 225 horses — and it debuted in Leipzig.

Opel suddenly revealed an unexpected side — and not at a glamorous auto show. The reveal happened among bulletproof vests and tactical radios. At the GPEC exhibition in Leipzig, dedicated to police and homeland security equipment, the Grandland made its debut in full patrol livery. The crossover tried on the role of a police car for the first time, with engineers from EDAG handling the conversion.

Under the hood, not the most obvious choice for a chase. The base is the Opel Grandland Plug-in Hybrid. 225 horsepower, 350 N·m and a 7-speed dual-clutch ‘robot’. That’s enough to rocket the SUV to 100 km/h in 7.8 seconds and push it all the way to 220 km/h. And then comes the twist — fuel economy. WLTP-rated at 14.5 kWh of electricity plus 2.6 l of petrol per 100 km in combined mode. Battery dead? Consumption climbs to 6.3 l per 100 km — still modest for a patrol vehicle.

Next, the arsenal. The Grandland received a Hänsch DBS 4000 signal system, extra flashing modules, loudspeakers, front and rear warning displays, plus preparation for Tetra digital radio with a GPS/Tetra antenna. Inside the cabin — control units, a holder for a handheld remote, ceiling-mounted speakers, additional lighting, fire extinguishers, emergency hammers and a mount for a traffic baton.

The body is wrapped in the VESBA 2.0 standard livery, with retroreflective and fluorescent elements. The idea is simple: keep the patrol car visible in pouring rain and pitch-black nights alike.

And the equipment? Just like a top-spec civilian Grandland: Intelli-Seat Pro seats with electric adjustment, adaptive Intelli-Lux HD lighting, Intelli-Vision 360-degree cameras and an infotainment system with a 16-inch screen. Any officer behind this wheel will have absolutely nothing to complain about.
