Turns out Americans aren't in a rush to trade in their cars at all. American Trucks surveyed 1,005 U.S. vehicle owners to find out which models become someone's “forever car” — and the Ford Explorer snuck into the top ten.
Honda Civic took first place. Next came the Toyota Camry, Toyota Corolla, Honda Accord, Subaru Crosstrek, Ford F-150, Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Ford Mustang, and closing out the list, the Ford Explorer.
The number one reason owners won't part with their car is refreshingly unglamorous: 24% simply paid off the loan. Another 18% said the car fits their lifestyle perfectly, 15% pointed to reliability, and 10% admitted it comes down to pure emotional attachment. No surprise there — people get attached to more than just their furniture.
What actually breaks expectations is the body style of the winners. Expecting sports cars? Not this time. SUVs took 39% of the votes, sedans 30%, pickups 12%, and coupes and sports cars managed just 8%. Practicality beat emotion again.
The bigger picture says it all: 79% of Americans admit they own a car they wouldn't sell under any circumstances. And 86% plan to keep driving it for as long as it's safe to do so — basically, until the end.
