Chery's Lepas brand is preparing a compact hatchback for Australia, arriving as both a full EV and a plug-in hybrid before the end of 2027.

Chery-owned brand Lepas is preparing something nobody saw coming for the Australian market — not another crossover, but a compact hatchback. The launch is planned before the end of 2027, according to Lepas Australia chief operating officer Lucas Harris.

Harris said he saw an early pre-production prototype at the factory a few weeks ago. He described the car as having a sporty look. That's where the details end for now: the model name, dimensions and technical specifications remain under wraps.

According to the outlet, the hatchback is expected to arrive in two forms — a fully electric version and a plug-in hybrid. Power output, battery capacity, range and pricing are all still unknown. No official images have been released either.

In the meantime, Lepas is set to enter the Australian market in November 2026 with the electric L6 crossover. The brand's local website also lists the upcoming L4 EV and L8 PHEV. Tarantas News previously reported on the European launch of the hybrid Lepas L8.
