The XT5 PHEV debuted in Chengdu with 155 km of electric range, 5C fast charging and Momenta's AI driving brain riding shotgun.

Everyone knows the crossover — nobody saw what's under the hood coming. Cadillac brought its new XT5 PHEV to the 29th Chengdu International Auto Show, a plug-in hybrid version of the familiar midsize crossover that suddenly learned to speak electric. The big change is hidden beneath the body: instead of one gasoline engine, a 1.5-liter turbo now works alongside two electric motors. 0-100 km/h takes a claimed 4.8 seconds. And even with a depleted battery, the XT5 PHEV doesn't back down — 5.4 seconds.

The gasoline engine puts out 115 kW, the front electric motor adds 160 kW, and the rear motor contributes 110 kW. Thanks to that separate rear motor, the XT5 PHEV gets electric all-wheel drive — no driveshaft, no compromises. The traction battery holds 35.5 kWh, good for 155 km of electric-only range on the WLTC cycle. With the battery depleted, Cadillac claims fuel consumption of 6.05 L/100 km. And here's the part that actually impresses: the battery supports 5C fast charging, taking the pack from 30 to 80% in about 15 minutes — faster than you can finish a coffee.

But the truly interesting change isn't under the hood — it's in the electronics. Cadillac calls the XT5 PHEV the first production luxury hybrid SUV to feature the Momenta R7 world model. The system works with cameras, radar and lidar, and it's built to handle highway and city navigation as well as automated parking. This is where the American brand's adaptation to the Chinese market really shows: Momenta's algorithms turned out to be just as important a headline as the hybrid powertrain itself. Maybe even more important.

Two trims were shown on the stand — Pro and Pro Max. The top version puts extra emphasis on the chassis, with electronically controlled RTD dampers and six-piston Brembo brakes. The cabin keeps its wide digital display, but the computing hardware has been upgraded to a Qualcomm 8775P chip. Photos also show physical climate control buttons and a separate rotary controller on the center console.

Cadillac had already said pre-sales of the XT5 PHEV in China would open on August 21 — the first day of the Chengdu Motor Show. In other words, today.
