The XPeng G9L turned out to be one of those Chengdu Motor Show debuts where the real story isn't the styling — it's the choice under the hood. This five-meter SUV comes as either a pure EV or a series hybrid EREV, and buyers get to pick which fight they want to have. Pre-orders opened in China on August 11 starting at 259,800 yuan, roughly $36,000 at current exchange rates.
The G9L is noticeably bigger than the standard G9: 5,120 mm long, 1,999 mm wide, with a 3,100 mm wheelbase. And yet XPeng skipped the third row entirely. All that space goes to five passengers and their luggage instead — which is why the second row gets its own ceiling display, a dedicated control panel, and seats with serious adjustment range. The photos from Chengdu make it obvious: this isn't trying to be a seven-seat “bus.” It's trying to be a spacious family lounge.
The range-extended version can cover up to 435 km on CLTC without the gasoline engine ever kicking in, with a combined figure that reaches 1,602 km. The pure-electric G9L is rated at up to 755 km. Both versions run on an 800-volt architecture with 5°C charging: the EV can add over 450 km of estimated range in nine minutes, while the EREV manages more than 300 km in the same window.
XPeng also made a bet on how a big body handles. The G9L gets dual-chamber air suspension and rear-wheel steering, which together shrink the turning radius down to something you'd expect from a much smaller car. Inside, there's a large central display, a separate infotainment screen for rear passengers, and an elaborate center console.
The real question now isn't about specs — it's about the final price. 259,800 yuan is only the opening pre-sale figure. XPeng is offering six EV and EREV versions, and the definitive pricing is expected once the model gets its full market launch in China.
