Ram is planning to expand its pickup lineup and fill the gap below the full-size 1500 with a new midsize Dakota. The model has been confirmed for a 2027 launch, with a target starting price around $40,000.

In an interview with The Drive, Ram CEO Tim Kuniskis emphasized that the Dakota needs to be competitive not just on price but also on capability. He stated that the new pickup must be a proper truck rather than a car with a bed. Key requirements include full payload and towing capabilities that buyers in this segment expect.

Kuniskis noted that Ram has previously succeeded in the near-midsize price range by selling the 1500 Classic alongside the new-generation 1500. The base 1500 Classic was priced at nearly $39,000 in 2024, helping the brand maintain a sweet spot in the market.

The $40,000 target aligns with Stellantis's strategy of lowering new vehicle prices through more compact and affordable models. The Dakota has been mentioned among the projects expected to support this direction.

Details about powertrains remain undisclosed. However, the Ram chief highlighted growing interest in hybrid solutions and described the likelihood of a V8 in the new Dakota as low.
