Polestar 6 electric roadster delayed until at least 2029
Polestar delays the Polestar 6 electric roadster launch to 2029, affecting customers and shifting focus to high-margin models like the Polestar 2 and 7.
The full debut of the Polestar 6 has been delayed once more. This flagship two-door electric roadster, based on the Polestar O2 concept, was originally slated for a 2026 launch. It has now been confirmed that production will be pushed back to at least 2029. This puts the project in the same category as the Tesla Roadster, which has been anticipated for over eight years.
Polestar, as a small player in the highly competitive EV market, is shifting its priorities. CEO Michael Löschel stated that the company is focusing on high-margin segments, particularly the updated Polestar 2 and the new SUV, the Polestar 7. Against this backdrop, the Polestar 6 is viewed as a low-volume, image-focused model, with its timeline subject to further adjustments.
The situation is especially acute for the 500 customers who, in 2022, paid $25,000 each for the Polestar 6 LA Concept Edition—a limited run of 500 cars. Initial deliveries, promised for 2026, are now postponed to at least 2029, with the final date still potentially changing.
Technically, the model's architecture remains unchanged: like the Polestar 5, the future 6 is built on an 800-volt platform with a 112 kWh battery. The top version is expected to feature a dual-motor powertrain producing 872 horsepower and 1,015 Nm of torque. This would position the Polestar 6 as an emotive flagship for the brand, but the project has now entered a long-term development phase.
Polestar emphasizes that the model remains part of its plans. However, given the company's priorities, investment scale, and strategic shifts in the EV market, an accelerated timeline seems unlikely.
