Lincoln may finally break its model drought. According to Autoweek, the brand is preparing a new body-on-frame SUV based on the next-generation Ford Bronco. Sources describe the project as a potential rival to the Mercedes-Benz G-Class and Land Rover Defender, offering more premium finishes while retaining the Bronco's off-road capability.

The new model, reportedly codenamed MKB, is expected to inherit the Bronco's boxy silhouette but feature Lincoln's signature grille and a more luxurious interior. It will be built on the next-generation Bronco platform, scheduled by Ford for the 2031 model year. This means Lincoln will get a true off-road architecture, since the Bronco is expected to maintain the Ranger's body-on-frame construction.

The intriguing question is whether Lincoln will keep the removable doors and roof—features that define the Bronco but may clash with luxury expectations. The brand hasn't revealed if these elements will stay or be replaced with more traditional sound insulation and a fixed roof.

This project could address multiple challenges for Lincoln. The brand needs fresh models after discontinuing the Corsair and the departure of the Ford Escape. Additionally, using Michigan production could help offset weak Ranger sales in 2025 and reduce reliance on importing the Nautilus from China. The Nautilus remains Lincoln's best-selling model, so both vehicles could coexist.

Lincoln's history with unconventional body styles is mixed—previous attempts like the Blackwood and Mark LT pickups were commercial failures. However, the market for luxury body-on-frame SUVs is growing, and the arrival of a "Baby G" could intensify competition.

Lincoln faces a key decision: whether to build a true premium off-roader or settle for a soft-roader based on the Bronco Sport as a Corsair alternative. For now, one thing is clear—the brand's need to refresh its lineup has become critical.
