GWM Cannon PHEV pickup to rival BYD Shark and Ford Ranger in Australia
The new GWM Cannon PHEV pickup, featuring Hi4-T hybrid tech, competes with BYD Shark 6 and Ford Ranger PHEV, offering 3500 kg towing and deliveries by year-end.
According to GWM's Australian head John Kett, the new Cannon PHEV pickup will compete with the BYD Shark 6 and Ford Ranger PHEV. However, it remains unclear how the Australian specification of the Cannon PHEV will differ from the version for the Chinese market.
Outside Australia, the new model measures 5653 mm in length, 1883 mm in width, and 1882 mm in height. This makes it 237 mm longer than the Cannon for the Australian market and 208 mm longer than the Cannon Alpha.
GWM Australia has confirmed that the new GWM Cannon PHEV will use the Hi4-T hybrid powertrain, which is also featured in the Tank 500. Preliminary data suggests the Cannon PHEV will be able to tow up to 3500 kg, surpassing the BYD Shark 6's 2500 kg towing capacity.
A spare wheel will be mounted under the vehicle's chassis, maximizing space in the extended cargo bed.
In the coming months, GWM Australia is expected to reveal more details about the Cannon PHEV, including its electric-only range. Deliveries to dealerships are slated to begin by the end of this year.
