Car technology reliability issues and JD Power rankings
JD Power study shows car tech like infotainment systems reduces reliability. Learn which brands rank best and worst, and how powertrains compare.
The latest car technologies designed to enhance the ownership experience are now the primary reason for declining reliability. According to the most recent JD Power U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study, the industry has shown worsening performance for three consecutive years, with reported problem rates reaching their highest level since 2022.
Infotainment systems continue to generate the most complaints. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration tops the list of issues for the third year running. Bluetooth connectivity, wireless charging, and manufacturer mobile apps are also frequently mentioned.
About 40% of owners received software updates in the past year, but most didn't notice significant improvements. In fact, vehicles with over-the-air update capabilities actually showed an increase in reported problems.
In the reliability rankings, Lexus took first place, followed by Buick, Mazda, and Toyota. At the bottom of the list were Volkswagen, Audi, Land Rover, Jeep, and Chrysler.
When it comes to powertrain types, plug-in hybrids were found to be the least reliable, followed by electric vehicles and conventional hybrids. Traditional gasoline models demonstrated the best long-term performance.
