The most expensive Rolls-Royce cars: from auctions to bespoke Boat Tail
Discover the priciest Rolls-Royce models, including vintage auction records and the $28 million Boat Tail. Learn about customization and luxury features.
When discussing the most expensive Rolls-Royce models, one might assume vintage cars from the early 20th century hold all the records. Indeed, collectible models from the 1910s to 1930s regularly fetch $5–7 million at auction. Notable examples include the 1933 Phantom II Special Town Car at $5.7 million and the unique 1926 Phantom I Round Door, which sold for $7.2 million. The absolute auction record belongs to the experimental 1963 10EX Touring Limousine, purchased in 2018 for $7.3 million.
However, the priciest Rolls-Royce cars aren't born at auctions but within the Coachbuild division. This is where modern masterpieces are crafted, with every detail hand-finished and virtually no budget constraints for the client.
The most expensive contemporary Rolls-Royce is the Boat Tail—or rather, three Boat Tail cars, each a bespoke project. Estimates suggest each vehicle approaches $28 million. The company keeps owners' names confidential, and rumors that one belongs to Jay-Z and Beyoncé remain unconfirmed.

This staggering price tag stems from an unparalleled level of customization. The exterior draws inspiration from J-class yachts, with a complex gradient paint job infused with microcrystals. The symmetrical Caleidolegno wood veneer on the rear deck matches the precision found on premium yachts.
The Boat Tail's centerpiece is its rear deck, which opens with wing-like panels to reveal a genuine hospitality module. Inside, you'll find refrigerators for Armand de Brignac champagne, crystal glassware, folding tables and chairs, and a luxurious umbrella. The opening mechanism takes cues from Santiago Calatrava's architectural designs, while crafting the pair of Bovet interior watches took over three years.
Each Boat Tail features unique material finishes. The second example, unveiled at the 2022 Concorso d'Eleganza, showcases mother-of-pearl accents and walnut veneer. Rolls-Royce has kept the third project under wraps, leaving experts to speculate just how exclusive it might be.
