Smart #2 concept: Electric two-seater successor to Fortwo
Smart reveals #2 concept, a two-seat electric car set for 2026. Based on new ECA platform, it targets European urban mobility with compact design.
Smart has unveiled the first images of its #2 concept, a new two-seat electric car that will directly succeed the Fortwo. The production version is set to debut in 2026, primarily targeting the European market.
From the sketches, it's clear that Smart retains its recognizable philosophy of compact urban vehicles. Short overhangs, wheels positioned at the corners, and a two-door layout directly echo the original 1998 Fortwo. However, the design has been updated with a more contemporary look: larger wheel arches, rounded shapes, and styling cues typical of newer models like the #1 and #3. Mercedes-Benz is responsible for the exterior design, emphasizing the brand's move toward a more premium direction.

The Smart #2 will be the brand's first model on the new Electric Compact Architecture (ECA), jointly developed by Geely and Mercedes-Benz. This sets it apart from other Smart models, which have largely been based on Chinese engineering. The car will maintain a classic layout: rear-wheel drive, two seats, and compact dimensions. A dual-motor version is also under consideration, though final specifications have not been disclosed.
Bringing back the Fortwo format is a strategic move for Smart. As electric vehicles grow in size, the brand is betting on ultra-compact urban mobility, where maneuverability and ease in heavy traffic remain key factors.
The Smart #2 is more than just a new model; it's an attempt to revive the philosophy of the ultra-compact electric car in a modern package. If successful, this project could give the European urban EV segment a fresh boost.
