BYD Sealion 5 PHEV could be Australia’s cheapest plug-in hybrid SUV
BYD’s new Sealion 5 PHEV lands in early 2026 with a low-to-mid $30k target, 156 kW FWD, 12.9–18.3 kWh batteries and up to 100 km range. See trims and features.
BYD is strengthening its foothold in hybrid SUVs and will roll out the new Sealion 5 in early 2026—the brand’s most affordable plug-in hybrid. Positioned below the Sealion 6, which currently starts at $42,990, the newcomer has a credible shot at becoming Australia’s cheapest PHEV and putting pressure on the Chery Tiggo 7 PHEV.
While pricing remains under wraps, local dealers indicate a low-to-mid $30,000 range. That would markedly lower the entry point to the segment and make the Sealion 5 a cost-effective alternative to the RAV4 and to compact EVs.
It will be offered in Essential and Premium trims. Both pair a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor for a combined 156 kW, driving the front wheels only. The base version uses a 12.9 kWh battery and claims 71 km of NEDC electric range; the Premium increases capacity to 18.3 kWh and up to 100 km without the engine.

Dimensions impress: 4,738 mm long, 1,860 mm wide and riding on a 2,712 mm wheelbase—larger than the new 2026 Toyota RAV4. The boot is rated at 463 litres, expanding to as much as 1,410 litres with the second row folded.
Expected equipment includes 18-inch wheels, a surround-view camera system, an 8.8-inch digital instrument display, a 12.8-inch infotainment touchscreen, wireless smartphone charging and BYD’s signature features.
Full pricing and specifications are set to be revealed closer to launch.
