A truck bed and a dog crate usually live in two different worlds. Ford, it seems, wants to change that. According to Ford Authority, the automaker has filed a patent application for a folding kennel built directly into the cargo bed — a dedicated spot for the dog that can be tucked away the moment you need the space for cargo instead.
Per the filing, the structure is meant to be integrated directly into the truck bed rather than bolted in as a separate portable crate. Its walls can be opened up for airflow or closed off when the weather turns cold or wet.
Here’s the clever part: the kennel folds flat against the front wall of the bed. In that position it barely eats into cargo space, so hauling gear isn’t a problem. The application was filed on February 10, 2025, and published on August 13, 2026.
Don’t expect this on the F-150 or Ranger order sheet just yet. Ford files patents for all kinds of bed-related ideas — from storage systems to fold-out cargo elements — and most of them never make it to production. Past filings, for example, have covered built-in side bins and rail-mounted containers.
Ford itself notes that patenting is a normal part of engineering work, a way to protect an idea early on. So for now, this reads more like a clever bed layout for dog owners than an announcement of a new accessory.
