Renault plans range extender option for Megane and Scenic EVs
Renault considers adding an EREV variant to future Megane and Scenic models, featuring a 1.5-liter engine as a generator, with new electric platform upgrades in 2028.
Renault is considering adding a range extender (EREV) option for future generations of the Megane and Scenic. The company plans to launch the second generation of its AmpR Medium electric platform in 2028, which will feature significant upgrades: more efficient motors with wound rotors, an 800-volt architecture, and support for ultra-fast charging—going from 15% to 80% in about 15 minutes. Batteries with higher energy density are also expected.
Originally, the new platform was intended to be fully electric, but due to Europe's slower transition to electric vehicles, Renault has decided to incorporate an EREV variant. The system will be supplied by Horse Powertrain, a joint venture between Renault and Geely.
The EREV will be based on a compact 1.5-liter four-cylinder C15 engine, which functions solely as a generator and does not directly drive the wheels. Both naturally aspirated and turbocharged versions will be available. Renault emphasizes that this setup could be relevant for the C and D segments and for those who cannot charge an electric vehicle every few days.
