The camouflaged Type 01 tackled the Goodwood Hillclimb in near silence, but the internet is still calling it a fridge on wheels ahead of its October New York reveal.

Jaguar showed the Type 01 in motion for the first time at the 2026 Goodwood Festival of Speed: the camouflaged prototype tackled the famous 1.87 km Goodwood Hillclimb—and did it almost silently, surrounded by the roar of dozens of other engines. For the brand, this wasn’t just a test run. It was an attempt to prove that the new electric GT exists somewhere beyond controversial renders and social media clips.

The reaction was brutal, again. The Type 01’s massive silhouette and unconventional proportions have been grating on old-school Jaguar fans for a while now, and the silence of the electric motors at a speed festival only poured fuel on the fire. One commenter wrote: “It still looks like a fridge.” Another went further, calling the car “an obituary for the automobile.”

But technically, Jaguar isn’t building a decorative show car. The Type 01 rides on an 800-volt architecture and packs three electric motors: one up front, two at the rear. Combined output is more than 1,000 hp and 1,300 Nm of torque. 0-60 mph should take just over 3 seconds, with a top speed around 250 km/h (155 mph). That puts it in Porsche Taycan Turbo GT and AMG GT XX territory—except Jaguar isn’t chasing familiar sportiness here. It’s chasing a sharp break from its own past.

The production version will be unveiled this fall in New York, with production expected to start toward the end of the year. The expected starting price is around $130,000.

Right now, the Type 01 isn’t selling silence or acceleration. It’s testing whether Jaguar still has the right to be uncomfortable for its own audience—and the internet is answering pretty clearly: no.
