At the 29th Chengdu Motor Show, BYD finally lifted the curtain on something fans had been waiting for since spring: the complete interior of the Fangchengbao Formula S GT. The brand had already shown off the electric shooting brake's exterior back in April, at the Beijing Auto Show, so calling this a world premiere of the whole model would be a stretch. But Chengdu just revealed the part that had stayed hidden until now.
Tarantas.News journalists got up close with the car in Chengdu itself. The photos show a light-toned cabin with a separate digital instrument cluster, a large central touchscreen, and an unusual steering wheel. BYD is rolling out its new 2.0 Smart Ecosystem here, with magnetic, threaded, and PIN interfaces built in for attaching extra accessories.
The S GT measures 5,025 mm long — or 5,095 mm with the optional tow hook — 1,967 mm wide, with a 2,960 mm wheelbase. The rear-wheel-drive version gets a 300 kW motor, roughly 408 hp. The all-wheel-drive model pairs a 190 kW front motor with a 300 kW rear one, for a combined 490 kW — about 666 hp.
And that's where the real choice kicks in. The S GT runs a 92.093 kWh battery, and depending on the version, it'll go 730, 800, or 850 km on the CLTC cycle. Note that the 900 km figure floating around in coverage of the whole lineup belongs to the Formula S sedan, not the wagon shown here. Range or power — buyers will have to pick just one.
A day before the show opened, China started taking pre-orders for the Formula S and S GT, with combined pricing set between 230,000 and 280,000 yuan — roughly $33,900 to $41,200. That's the Chinese pre-order price for the whole lineup, though; how it breaks down across individual S GT trims hasn't been disclosed yet. Deliveries are expected to start in September.
The concept itself is more interesting than any number here: instead of another oversized SUV, BYD is offering a five-meter electric wagon — and forcing buyers to choose between maximum range and the punchiest dual-motor setup. Judging by the specs, there won't be a compromise option.
