At Volkswagen's stand in Chengdu, we finally got up close with the ID.UNYX 07 — and it might be one of the brand's most interesting Chinese launches in a while. Starting at 129,900 yuan, roughly $18,300, the car delivers 558 kilometers of CLTC range and a surprisingly generous 711-liter trunk for its size. Fold down the rear seats and that number jumps to 1,580 liters.
But calling this a Chengdu Motor Show 2026 debut would be misleading. The ID.UNYX 07 was actually unveiled back on April 24 at the Beijing Auto Show, and it hit the Chinese market on May 23. The lineup now consists of the Pure and Pure SE trims, priced at 129,900 and 139,900 yuan respectively — around $18,300 and $19,700.
The five-door measures 4853x1852x1566 mm with a 2826 mm wheelbase. A single rear-mounted motor produces 170 kW, or 231 PS, and 350 Nm of torque. A 59.9 kWh battery delivers the claimed 558 km of CLTC range, with the sprint to 100 km/h taking 8.1 seconds.
The real headline of the ID.UNYX 07 isn't the hardware — it's the electronics, and that's where things get genuinely interesting. This is the first production Volkswagen built on the China-developed CEA architecture, created by Volkswagen China Technology Company, CARIAD China and XPeng. It's designed for constant OTA updates: in July, owners already received a new software version with improvements to infotainment, parking and driver-assistance systems. In other words, the car keeps evolving after you've bought it.
Inside, there's a 10.25-inch instrument cluster, a 15-inch central display, a 12-inch passenger screen and an AR head-up display. CarPlay, HiCar, a UWB digital key and Highway NOA are all on board. One more detail worth knowing for city driving: the minimum turning radius is just 4.7 meters.
Will the ID.UNYX 07 ever reach other markets? For now, there are no confirmed plans. So the Chinese price shouldn't be read as a preview of what it might cost elsewhere: even if a handful of cars eventually trickle in through alternative channels, the final price would depend on logistics, duties and dealer margins.
