At the Chengdu Motor Show, EXEED's X-CONCEPT swaps five or seven seats for three and a normal door for a lifting body panel woven with bamboo.

Most exhibitors bring new crossovers to an auto show. EXEED brought a question: what if you ripped out two seats and replaced the door with a giant lift-up hatch? The 29th Chengdu International Motor Show opened on August 21, and tucked among EXEED's production models sat something else entirely — the X-CONCEPT. Forget the powertrain and the range; the whole point here is the idea of the car itself. There are only three seats inside. Instead of a normal door, an entire section of the body swings upward like a wing to let passengers in. The Chengdu Motor Show 2026 itself runs through August 30 and has already drawn roughly 1,600 cars from nearly 120 brands.

One important caveat: Chengdu isn’t the world premiere. EXEED already showed the concept at the Beijing Auto Show on April 24, 2026. That doesn’t take anything away from its status, though — EXEED calls the X-CONCEPT the flagship of its future driverless mobility push. A streamlined one-box body, through-flow aero channels front and rear, an active grille, unusual wheels and elongated lighting elements — this design clearly wasn’t built to blend in with the production cars on the stand.

But the most surprising decision is hidden inside. Instead of the usual five or seven seats, there’s a bold three-seat layout built for one, two or three passengers. And for the trim, designers skipped leather and plastic altogether in favor of traditional Chinese bamboo weaving — thin bamboo fibers prepared by hand and worked into the cabin as a decorative element.

The technical side, on the other hand, is almost a black box. EXEED hasn’t disclosed the powertrain specs, battery capacity, range, the level of autonomy, pricing or a possible production date. So calling this show car a ready-made robotaxi would be premature. For now, it’s primarily a statement of design and of a cabin scenario where the driver finally stops being the most important person in the car.
